YUI: Experience Traditional Japanese Living

2026/09/14

Since 2017, under the brand “YUI,” we have designed and operated unique accommodations by restoring traditional kominka (old Japanese houses) across Takamatsu and Teshima, an island in Kagawa's Seto Inland Sea. Crafted for those moved by art and architecture, these once-vacant homes are minimally renovated to preserve their historic soul while embracing yohaku—the profound Japanese aesthetic of empty space.

YUI revives these structures into living spaces where guests can truly inhabit the local lifestyle. Rather than seeking grand monuments, we breathe new life into entirely ordinary traditional homes. By reediting the forgotten stories of these houses, we transform them into places that hold new purpose and value for the community.

The name “YUI” carries deep cultural roots. In ancient Japan, where people believed in Yaoyorozu no Kami (eight million gods), it was said that a divine spirit resided even within the simplest knots—known as musubi, or the act of binding. Furthermore, the word yui historically referred to a traditional system of collective labor and mutual aid within rural villages. Embodied in our name is a dedication to weaving together different eras and people to create fresh value.

Through YUI, we strive to build a meaningful business that collaborates with local producers and businesses, ensuring that our presence directly supports and gives back to the community.
